Can KMJE and KDRT-LP Share 101.5 fm?

And what is a "move-in" or "encroachment" anyway?

The FCC recently changed the rules for moving a full-power radio station.  What used to take 2-3 years has now been reduced to a minor modification of a license, and can be granted within 60 days of being published in the Federal Register, which in our case is May 29.  This means time is limited.

KMJE is currently in Gridley, CA over 73 KM away, broadcasting at 101.5 FM, the same frequency as KDRT-LP. KMJE recently applied to move to outside of Woodland, about 3 KM from KDRT-LP.  At this distance, KDRT-LP would not be allowed to broadcast a signal at 101.5 FM, if KMJE's application to move is granted

This "move-in" of KMJE from Gridley to Woodland is also referred to as "encroachment" in the low-power fm community.  Read more about encroachment from the folks at Prometheus Radio Project.  Read more about encroachment from another station that went through this, KYRS-LP.

The two maps below show the "City Grade" and "Service" contours of KDRT-LP and the proposed KMJE location.   Notice that the blue "City Grade" proposed signal of KMJE covers all of Davis (and beyond), the same location as KDRT-LP's "City Grade" signal.  The maps were created with the help of REC Networks, to whom we are very grateful.

KDRT-LP Programmer George Moore also explains the technicalities in a very straightforward way in his letter to the Sacramento Bee.
