yolo archiveToday, our boys from Vermont enter their 30th year of play ... so we are celebrating in style (how else would we celebrate?) with Phishmaster Phil Schutt!
Tonight's show starts with about 15 minutes of Phish covering Scarlet Begonias>Fire on the Mountain during the second set of their first show ever, played on Dec. 2, 1983 in a school cafeteria. From the sound of it, this set was recorded on someone's sister's handheld cassette tape player ...

After that bit of history, we slide right into a wicked Mike's>Hydrogen>Weekapaug from Isla Vista, Calif., on April 16, 1992.
And then it's time to drop into the second set from the Bomb Factory show in Dallas, on May 7, 1994.
Be ready, it's a sheer sea of sound set ... a great listen. Enjoy the show!

Jesus Just Jeft Chicago ... and Phish just entered the Events Center at UCSB

yolo archiveThere are a few special treats in this well-rounded Phish show from Dec. 6, 1994. First, the band plays two acoustic tunes: Bill Monroe's I'm Blue, I'm Lonesome; and a Boston song, Foreplay/Long Time. Both are lovely listens. If that's not enough to tempt you, the encore features the Beatles tune "Back in the USSR," which Phish has only played twice in nearly 30 years.

Two gentle sets of acoustic Phish with Neil Young and Sarah Mclachlan

Trey and Sarah Mclachlan sing the most beautiful duet near the end of tonight's show, covering Sad Lisa by Cat Stevens. It's in the final 15 minutes and should be appreciated by a much wider audience than just us crazy phans.
Both sets of acoustic Phish, from Oct. 17 and 18, 1998, are filled with delicate melodies, plus lighter versions of some (usually) crazy favorites like Guyute and Possum.

Le Phish magnifique!

The Colonel told me about this show, that it was one of the best Phish shows he had ever heard ... and I have to agree. It was a balmy night at the Espace Julien in Marseille, France on July 10, 1997, and every single song is beautifully, funkily or crazily just perfect.

First, see the setlist. Looks about average, right? ... then listen and have a magnificent musical time!

Set I: Dogs Stole Things, Limb By Limb, Ginseng Sullivan, Bathtub Gin > Llama > Wading in the Velvet Sea, Lizard-y Jam, Olivia's Pool

Set II: Also Sprach Zarathustra > Julius > Magilla, Ya Mar > Ghost > Take Me to the River

What's better than Velvet Underground's 'Loaded'? Phish's version--a musical costume!

yolo archive "Loaded" was so good that Rolling Stone put this album on its top 500 albums of all time, and your phriendly radio hostess (and Velvet Underground newbie) must agree. Whether you like Phish or not, who doesn't enjoy Sweet Jane? And Cool it Down is perfection ...

Even if you are the most loyal Velvet Underground fan in the continental USA, you might be surprised to find yourself enjoying Phish's version of Rock and Roll more than any you have ever heard.

Go on, enjoy the show!

It was a surprise five-song-set throwdown at Boise State University...

yolo archiveSeptember 14, 1999 was the date, and this was a total sleeper show. Nobody expected the band to lay down such a thick and musically rich second set, comprised of only five songs. Zappa's Peaches En Regalia opened, followed by one of the longest AC/DC bags to date. AC/DC slides into Gumbo, followed by Down With Disease into Frankenstein.

The first set (which opens the show) was also spectacularly fun and easy to listen to, perfect for a new phan just warming up her listening skills...
