In this first broadcast of 2012, The Golden Road weaves a tapestry of sound from the Haight/Ashbury in San Francisco circa 1967 with some of Jefferson Airplane's very best music...full of imagery, wonderful words and sounds of a time that certainly left it's mark for the long run. Also included is some of the first of Paul Kantner's vision of a place & time that was not of this Earth via "Blows Against The Empire"...essentially when the Airplane became the Starship...and we ain't talkin' Mickey Thomas here! And let us not forget one of the best albums to hail from collaborative efforts in the Bay Area..."If I Could Only Remember My Name" by David Crosby & Friends.

Of course, there is also the good ol' Grateful Dead with an epic set from the Fillmore East on 2/11/69. Bill Graham gets his bronzed cowbell and we all get some Primal Dead. Life is good!

The Golden Road touches down in the vibrant late-1979 and 1980 era with some cherry-picked sounds that oughta make it for you! Special appearance by the short-lived, but righteously cookin' band, Kingfish. Good times for sure and now you can check 'em out right here on The Dirt.

Here's some rare footage of Kingfish in action with the long lost Robbie Hoddinott laying down some excellent lead work:

In this edition of The Golden Road, we honor the "November Birthday Boys" in all their glory and tip our cap to dear friends who we have gone "backwards down the number line" with on many occasions. Special thanks to Rahda for the unique timing and Phishy inspiration, and the Hunt/Cartwright girls who graced the K-Dirt studio on a cold, foggy evening to warm our hearts + minds!

Here's some excellent words:

Happy happy oh my friend
Blow out candles once again
Leave the presents all inside
Take my hand
And let’s take a ride
Backwards down the number line
You were eight and I was nine
Do you know what happened then?

Do you know why we’re still friends?
Laughing all these many years
We pushed through hardships tasted tears
Made a promise one to keep
I can still recite it in my sleep
Every time a birthday comes
Call your friend and sing a song
Or whisper it into his ear
Or write it down
Just don’t miss a year

You decide what it contains
How long it goes but this remains
The only rule is it begins
Happy happy oh my friend

You decide what it contains
How long it goes but this remains
The only rule is it begins
Happy happy oh my friend

In this edition of The Golden Road, we feature the recent release, "Europe '72, Volume 2". A long time comin'...these tunes were being considered by the band for inclusion on the original 3-record release known & loved by Deadheads since it came out in November of 1972. Lots of excellent playing, singing and a good look at how the Dead loved to rock out behind Pig Pen on some of his classic romps through the R & B scene.

Here is some very rare footage of Pig & the band tearing it up on Chinatown Shuffle:
