KDRT Blues Benefit a Rockin' Success!

A good time was had by all who attended the KDRT Winter Blues Benefit Concert held at the Odd Fellows Hall in downtown Davis, January 26th. Thanks to the expert musicianship of the Bill Scholer Blues Band and special guest Barry "The Fish" Melton, the crowd was treated to a night of dancin' & groovin'. Gabe Lewin of Clarity Sound worked his magic so that the music was always very energizing, but never over-powering the Hall. Guests were treated to the local wines of Rominger West Winery, beer on tap from the Davis Food Co-op, fresh-baked wildebreads from Woodstock's Pizza, and delectable desserts from Ciocolat. KDRT volunteers had a blast decorating the hall with 60's era tie-dye, lava lamps, and a nice touch of green was added by potted herbs donated by Redwood Barn Nursery.
And then there was the awesome poster that could be seen all over town, designed by Sally Parker from The Flatlander and printed by Abbey Road Press---it really set the mood for a high-spirited, 60's inspired community-action style celebration!

The crowd got an "up-close & personal" view of legendary 60's guitarist, Barry Melton, joined by local favorites, the Bill Schloler Blues Band. KDRT's Jim "Live Tracks" Buchanan can be seen in the background recording the concert for future airplay, with help that night from KDRT's Dr. Strangely Strange, (Magical Music Box) who also provided the electric peace sign.

Scholer's Blues Band's seasoned players, Jim Monroe on keyboard, Dale Lyberger on bass, and Craig Faria on drums were the perfect complement to the guitars of Scholer and Melton. If you ever run into Dale, ask him to show you the early 60's era photo of him playing in the same hall (he's got it on his ipod).

Barry Melton is joined by Bay Area musician and Capay Valley grower, Clarence Van Hook. The two of them are both the "real deal", with Van Hook's warm tones contrasting well with Melton's inspired edginess. Clarence had a long rainy ride home ahead of him that night, and we're glad he came to Davis to say hi to his friend, Barry.
Bill Scholer has lent his musical talents to several KDRT benefits, and is a true supporter of local music and local media. He and his band are featured on the first "KDRT Presents.. CD" that was recorded live from a concert in E Street Plaza in the summer of 2005. Check back to our website soon for links and info. on how to order (We also thank KDRT volunteer Susan Cotterel for the new CD cover design).
And thanks to everyone who came downtown to support community radio that night. May the grassroots at KDRT continue to grow!
