== Introduction ==

We may as well mention [Clear Channel] in the first sentence. And the [1996 Telecommunications Act], radio consolidation, and robots. [Robotic radio personalities] who sound and act like real people, and who seem to be in every city- I mean market- at once. How is this slight of hand accomplished? And how can you get one of those widgets for you station? Well, for only $19.99...

Actually, radio automation really isn't rocket science, isn't inherently evil, and might be a nice pet for your radio station. If you care for it and nuture it, automation may even become your friend- not exactly lifelike, but not totally devoid of personality either. Like any tool, it can be imbued with the spirit of your station and your community. Just don't call it HAL.

Radio automation can help you program your station with less effort, less money and provides a more flexible programming schedule 24/7. Radio automation software makes it easier for you to schedule syndicated programming such as Democracy Now! and FSRN. It can record and archive your live programs, play them back, and put them on the internet with little effort on your part.

With this overview we hope to capture the state of radio automation in 2006 for low power stations across the country. Stations with mighty missions and small budgets, with hacker ethics, DIY spirits, and volunteers embedded with the old Mother of Invention; necessity. Or something like that. You've probably met people like this. They are called neighbors. Introduce yourself sometime and you'd be surprised at how inventive people can be.

A radio automation system shouldn't overcome you. It is a tool. These pages are designed to help you choose the right radio automation tools and kits that are right for you.
Onward to radio automation and restful sleep!
